Let Loose

I’m back from Fort Worth/Austin where I learned a very important lesson from a very intelligent almost 4-year-old: sometimes you just have to jump.

And, I learned another important lesson from an almost 2 year old: sometimes when things get crazy you just need to get out.

This past week I did both. I escaped the crazy that is Corpus and went to Fort Worth where I have family & friends to love me and help with River so that I could “jump” for a while. Dan does what he can and I admire how hard he works and how little he sleeps, but residency is rough. With him working 80ish hours a week and me trying to raise two crazy dogs and a little human on my own, life has been rough. I have been escaping to Fort Worth for sanity sake and booking sessions so that I could count it as a work trip. I did shoot a wedding on Saturday with my friend Ann, so technically I was traveling for work, but I actually took it easy last week instead of booking sessions all week and it was somewhat…um…awesome. But, after a while a little boring. I was actually excited to get back to the chaotic life that is Corpus. River is starting to get into a nap routine and I am determined to catch up on work this week. I’ve continued to think about photography in terms of what should I do, and I think it is going to continue to be a balancing act. I’m not ready to throw in the towel, but I’m also not ready to book back to back weddings every weekend as I may have been a few years ago. Life changes and right now I am feeling really good about my life. I really do love the craziness. It was overwhelming at first, but as River and I are figuring out our little routine things are becoming more and more normal and I wouldn’t have it any other way. So yes, this means I’m coming out of my cave (so to speak). I’m planning on turning on my work cell phone tomorrow (something that hasn’t been done in over a month, I’m very afraid of how many voicemails I have), finishing editing all of my sessions, responding to new clients and mailing out print orders. This is one of my second shooters (Rachel) and her family. Maybe it’s because of the time (2 a.m.) but I couldn’t figure out how to properly phrase that first sentence. Maybe I should have said, this is Rachel and her sweet family. Rachel second shoots weddings with me sometimes. ….I should probably just stick to photos. Less words, more pictures.

They are expecting baby #5 any day now! I’m looking forward to seeing many pictures of her in the near future.

Dan and I miss our besties so very much. One day we are moving to the mountains with these guys. We already have a name for our farm/yurt/mountain homestead… the “LeverVaughan Home”

Afton & Ashley are two of our good friends here in Corpus. Afton is a resident with Daniel (my hubster) and Ashley is a school teacher and (I feel he might want me to add) football coach. I was so excited when Afton asked me to do a session with them for Christmas photos! She said they try every year to take some and they never turn out…which made me a little nervous…but I think they’ll have a few good ones to choose from this year. I had an extremely hard time picking just a few for my blog.

I love dogs in photoshoots. Well…I mean, I just love dogs in general.

Beauty.

Oh, the eyes. LOVE so much. I could basically comment on every single one of these, so I’ll try better to refrain.

I know I said I would refrain, but I have to comment on this. Can I just say….more please. I’m definitely printing one of these bad boys for my office. Heck, fridge.

Happy 2 Month Birthday River!

River is 2 months old! I both can and can’t believe it. I know I said I would be posting personal things on my personal blog from now on….but it’s River’s birthday. I took over 100 pictures in this series and it was so hard to pick only 4 to share. I’ll be posting MANY more on my personal blog, so if this isn’t enough for you-hop on over. I also needed an excuse to remind everyone that my birthday is tomorrow and today is the deadline to book your wedding and receive a complimentary engagement session.

‘Tis the season for family photos! I know it is unusual for me to post so many family sessions in a row. Don’t worry, my next post is an engagement. I have to tell you, these last few family sessions have really started wooing me towards taking more child and family sessions.

These cute twins just turned three! I love their curls, so so cute.

It may surprise you to know that there are very few sessions that I leave feeling good about. Usually, I think about all of the things I should have/could have done and have a slight feeling of regret until I look at the images on my computer and realize that actually, they turned out pretty good. This is especially true with child and family sessions because that isn’t my specialty (as I have said MANY times) I feel much more comfortable shooting engagements and weddings. This family session was the exception to the rule. I left the session so excited to look at the images because I knew they were going to be stellar. Not only was this a super cute family, but the kids were AWESOME and did everything I asked them to do and even added their own flare. When I finally had time to go through the images I was even happier than I thought I would be. This is definitely my most favorite family shoot yet.

See, I told you. Aren’t these the cutest kiddos ever?! I should also mention that this is my birth photographer and her family so I was under even more pressure to produce stellar images. I’m always nervous when photographing a fellow photographer.

This one cracks me up. He was making this face the whole time.

Dan and I met Chris & Laura through our natural child birth class. We were so blessed by spending time with them every week, I can only imagine how blessed little Timothy will be to have such awesome parents. Now that I have experienced motherhood myself, I am overjoyed for what is in store for Chris and Laura. I know they are going to have a blast being parents!

Congratulations you guys! I can’t believe little Timothy will be here in a matter of weeks!

I am the first to admit photographing children and families is not my specialty. I often times look at other photographers who have made the cross over from wedding to portrait (like Lauren Clark) with great envy and think to myself, “maybe one day I will figure out how to photograph a family like they do…”, I just work better with adults who listen to my ideas and are willing to do crazy thing if I ask them to. For this reason, I often times re-direct family inquiries to other photographers who specialize in child and family portrait photography. However, I have been itching to shoot ANYTHING since having River, so I booked every inquiry I got-even families. I was nervous about this, but I have to admit, even though I am primarily a wedding photographer I think these turned out pretty great. Although, I had great subjects-this little family was super cute!
